(Reuters) – A U.S. Navy warship and a Canadian frigate carried out a routine transit of the Taiwan Strait on Tuesday, the U.S. navy mentioned.
In recent times, U.S. warships, and occasionally these from allied nations similar to Britain and Canada, have routinely sailed by way of the strait, drawing the ire of China, which claims Taiwan over the objections of the island’s democratically elected authorities.
In an announcement, the U.S. Navy mentioned its Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer Higgins and the Royal Canadian Navy’s Halifax-class frigate Vancouver performed the transit by way of a hall within the strait that’s past the territorial sea of any coastal state.
“Cooperation like this represents the centerpiece of our method to a safe and affluent area,” the Navy assertion added.
