The household of Daniel Prude, a Black man who died greater than two years in the past after he was detained by upstate New York police, have reached a $12 million settlement with town of Rochester.
Town introduced the information on Thursday however didn’t acknowledge any wrongdoing in Prude’s March 2020 dying. Prude died following an encounter with police after they restrained him with handcuffs and positioned a “spit hood” over his head.
In an announcement, Mayor Malik Evans stated the settlement was one of the best resolution “given the prices of continued litigation.”
“It could have value taxpayers much more to litigate, and would have positioned a painful toll on our neighborhood,” Evans stated. “It’s now time to look ahead so we may fit collectively and focus our efforts on Rochester’s future.”
Prude, 41, was having a psychological well being episode when police restrained him. He died days later at a hospital after being taken off life help.
