(Reuters) – An opposition politician who stood towards long-time chief Alexander Lukashenko within the controversial 2020 presidential election has been detained, his staff mentioned.

Andrei Dmitriev, 41, an activist who leads an anti-Lukashenko social motion was detained within the capital Minsk on Wednesday, in line with a message posted on his Fb (NASDAQ:) web page.

The explanation for his custody was not but recognized, it added.

There was no remark from authorities in Belarus on the detention.

Lukashenko, in energy since 1994, claimed victory within the 2020 vote, which was marred by claims of voter fraud and harsh repression of the opposition by authorities loyal to Lukashenko.

His announcement of victory over main opposition candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya triggered weeks of mass protests wherein a whole bunch of hundreds of Belarusians took to the streets urging Lukashenko to step apart.

Dmitriev got here fourth within the election with 1.2% of votes solid, the official outcomes confirmed.

Lukashenko, a detailed ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, violently quashed the protests and has since stepped up a marketing campaign of repression to silence home political opposition.

Rights teams estimate there are about 1,500 political prisoners in Belarus because of the crackdown.
